Default Question about RAID 10 (1+0) and RAID 01 (0+1)

Which is better: RAID 10 (1+0) or RAID 01 (0+1)?

I'm asking because I have two 10k 16mb VelociRaptor HDDs and obviously I want to use their speeds for performance, but I also have two 500GB 7200rpm 16mb HDDs that I want to use for storage.

By putting the two 10k RPM HDDs into RAID 0, for performance, and utilizing the higher capacity HDDs for storage for RAID 1, isn't RAID 01 (0+1) the best option out of the two?

Both descriptions are relatively the same for me. I understand that if one of the higher capacity drives goes, there will still be one working so no data is lost, which is what I'm aiming for...but what would happen if one of the 10k rpm HDDs goes? Does the whole system crash or something? What are the functions of the 10krpm HDDs in both set-ups?

Please explain.

I've been using RAID 0+1 (01) as my primary RAID configuration, however, I've always read good things about RAID 10. Or is what I am trying to accomplish above really RAID 10?

i think you have your concepts mixed up. with two VR and two 500gb drives, it's best if you have a RAID-0 of two VR for the OS, and a separate RAID-1 of two 500gb for storage.

using RAID-10 means that one drive is "copied" and mirrored to another drive, then these two are combined with two more RAID-1 drives in a setup of RAID-0 to increase performance. RAID-01 means that there's RAID-0 with two drives, and these two drives are "copied" into two more drives for RAID-1.

it doesn't make sense to use different types of drives for RAID. you'll be limiting yourself to the slowest drive, making the speed of those VR's useless, and that's why you should have two SEPARATE arrays of RAID-0 (for OS) and RAID-1 (for data storage).

There's very little difference performance wise. 10 technically has more fault tolerance though.

So you're saying that I should do RAID 0 with the VelociRaptor and RAID 1 with the storage drives? That's what I said I wanted to do. I thought combining them means it's RAID 0+1, since it's RAID 0 and RAID 1...is it not? This is really getting confusing.

@Chromewell: Should I do RAID 10? And how is RAID 10 more fault-tolerant?

i just explained to you that RAID-10 or RAID-01 is not the same as separate RAID-1 and RAID-0. in order to have RAID-10/01, you have to have 4 drives that are exactly the same, otherwise performance will downgrade to the slowest drive. chromewell is right, RAID-10 and RAID-01 is almost the same thing, but that's not going to matter in your case. you're not going to be able to use it unless you have 4x 500gb drives or 4x VR's.

OH, okay! I kind of understand now. Help me understand though for future knowledge though...

RAID 0+1 is when ALL four drives are in RAID 0 but in sets of 2 and mirror the data back to each set right? And RAID 1+0 is when ALL four drives are in RAID 1 with each other but one set is...? Err...wow, I'm confused now.

As for RAID 0 and RAID 1 for my set-up, how's that going to work? What will be installed on the RAID 0 drives? Where should I install the OS? And then what should be installed on the RAID 1 drives?

Sorry guys bear with me here, I'm not trying to cause problems...just trying to educate myself so I don't have to repeat myself in the future.
