Sound stuttering

Can someone plez help me - I have dell laptop (not new), but it has just decided after running perfectly fine to start playing CDs and my voicefiles in a stuttering sound. I work as a medical transcriptionist and the wave files that I have sound like I-I-I or Doc-Doc-Tor-Tor. This is continuous. I have tried downloading drivers, but not sure I did the right thing. I do not know that much about computers - so probably did not do this right. Any help is much appreciated
