Default adapting HD

Forgive the noob.

I have a laptop that fried an HD. I can fire it up in DOS, but when I do chkdsk it gets about halfway through and says there are errors. Since it runs, I'm guessing that some sectors are bad.

Anyway, I want to hook up the HD to my desktop to see what data I can salvage off of it. I don't know exactly how to describe them, other than they both have IDE and are both Western Digital. Part number on the laptop is WD2500BEVE and is called "scorpio". Its a Dell laptop if that helps. The Desktop is also IDE, but its part number is just WD2500 and it says "caviar". Both say "enhanced IDE" but the pins are different. They both have that double row of pins with one pin missing in the top row but they're spaced differently.

Any ideas?
