Default Hard Drive Sound? maybe?

Hey guys,
I've come across a problem when upgrading and speeding up my aunts computer. The computer is in Descent shape, she's kept up with spy-ware and anti-virus'. Shes done disk cleanup and defragged regularily however having a 1.8ghz processer with only 256mbs of ram didn't help. So I upgraded her 256mb stick of ddr2 533mhz too two one gig sticks of ddr 2 667mhz. However this did not speed up her computer. Yes they were installed correctly and the computer recognized 2 gig's of ram however I began to listen closly to the computer. I heard the sound a bit before but figured it was just because the ram couldn't keep up with the harddrive. However this is the sound - If I click on start (windows xp classic menu), program files, accessories by the time I get to accessories the computer makes a sputtering noise. As I listened closly it sounds as though its coming from the hard drive and its goes click, click, decell. It does this about 2-10 times before it will finally load. Some times you have to click back on the desktop and close the start menu and try again but try to open it fast. Is this from the hard drive or the processor? I believe its from the hard drive and that would be why its slowing everything down. If it was the processor wouldn't the computer just freeze if it got jammed like that? Remember this computer is close to three years old so the hard drive would be the first to go.

Any thoughts? or am I on the ball?

Thanks a lot,
MrNah
