Default sound quality poor when played directly from CD/DVD

I just have the onboard soundcard. (Realtek AC97) If I play a song or a video file from my hard disk, it works fine, but if I play a DVD or a CD the sound quality is just poor. I have to crank up the volume at max to hear the sound. Any suggesstions?? Thank you

Check volume controls and see if your CD volume is turned up... Also, many players can play CD Audio without the cable, so you might want to try those. They tend to have MUCH higher quality and work off your wav volume. Media Player Classic is one that doesn't need an audio cable...

My CD player volume is at Max. I will probably remove my audio cables and see if that helps at all.

Sounds like a bad drive or cable. Do you have any other drives you can take out of another computer to test it?
