Default Unable to detect CD-Rom drive

When I was about to burn a DVD from my Sony DVD-Rom 16x to a Sony DVD-RW drive, I noticed that my DVD-Rom was no longer detected by my computer. I've checked the wiring and it is not loose. I had it working for 3-4 years now and just today it began to malfunction. I also noticed the DVD-Rom light is always on.

Are there any way to tell if it is the wiring or should I just buy a new DVD-Rom drive? Any help would be great. Thanks.

First, make sure the cables are attached and secure. Go to the control panel and remove the item from the device manager. Reboot; it should be redetected on start up.

The IDE cable will only plug in a certain way ... not like a floppy where you can plug it in up side down.

Have you tried uninstalling the drive?

Yes I understand that, but sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. It is strange. How do I go about uninstalling it? And I don't think I have the software to reinstall it if necessary after the uninstallation.

if you are running xp you should right-click my computer>properties>hardware>device manager then find your cd-rom drive under the appropriate section, then you shoudl be able to right click it and uninstall it, if you are running XP it should have drivers that will work already built in, if not you might want to check on that...i would say that 2000 would have drivers as well, but dont quote me on that.
