Default Problem with laptop...

i have a compaq presario 2200, and im trying to use a linux live-cd, ive tryed a suse live dvd, and a knoppix live cd, and with both, the computer will freeze in the middle of loading them, my guess is the cd drive has a powersaving feature and turns off in the middle of loading them, if this is true, how can i turn it off, if its not the reason, does anyone have any ideas....

Could be that the CD-ROM drive is dying. Is it making any loud noises when it reads the disc? (such as vibrations)
