Linux game compatibility?

I'm going to be setting up a Windows 98/Linux [insert distribution] (I've not decided which distribution I'm going with, and I'm eventually going to upgrade from 98 to XP, or wait for Longhorn and see if it's worth it) dual-boot system.

Anyway, I use my computer largely for gaming, and I'm wondering; Including the usage of emulators such as WINE, exactly how much can I expect in the way of gaming compatibility? I expect I'd still have to run some games on the Windows partition, but can anyone give me a rough estimation of how much compatibility I can expect?

I run mostly older games (Alpha Centauri, Doom, Doom 2, Icewind Dale, Baldur's Gate, etc.) and I've heard that usually WINE can handle older games, however, now that I have a semi-decent system, I'm going to be getting into newer games (UT '04, Doom 3, Scrapland, etc.).

Honestly, Ive been working on this issue for a while. If you wanna play games without much trouble keep playing them on the windows partition. Anyhow, if you still want to try it you should not try it with WINE since it provides a WIN32 platform for application exes more than it does for games. You should try WINEX ( which is not free). Or go to www.transgaming.com ( not free too) and see what they have to offer, they always update their libraries to make linux systems run newer games, but still not all new games run on those two systems. Furhtermore, you will need to set up 3D accelaration on you GeForce FX 5700LE this could be a daunting job depending on which distro you are using.

I think it may be time to upgrade... The upgrade! My machine will soon be a 939 X2 4000+, 4x512 DDR400, and an 8600GTS.
