i really need you guys to help out with this. thank you so much. alrighty, so i know ive posted alot about my comp, but my dad "needs this information on paper" before i can make the purchase. He is really obsessed with septumly checking everything, since the last comp we bought for $350 we later found was non- upgradeable. But i know alot more than i did then.
I've told him the answers to alot of this stuff, but of corse, he doesn't believe me
He wants to be able to do alot of "computer/visual art" stuff, and he needs to see what people say about it.
i explained about how we are buying a new comp for a grand isnt goinna have all the elite best stuff possible, but its still great stuff
ALRIGHT, so the things i need from YOU guys, if you'd be so kind:

1-comp goinna be able to handle VISUAL ART (like photo shop) for at least a few years

2-comp goinna be capeible of video editing and photo editing for at least a few years

3-graphics graphics graphics capability

4-top photoshop software & which is easiest to use

5-transfer VHS tapes to dvd and burn media onto cds and dvds

6-expandibility of computer

7- lastly, he has some wierd notion that maybe people on forums are paid by companies to promote their product, so if you could please post your computer experience, like how long uve work with computers, your job, whatnot

all this is CPU and ram bound stuff (followed by the obvious HDD restriction). depending on how fancy of video stuff you do, you may be bound by the capture device.

no point since theres no way for verification.

1. interesting that the case is the first thing listed on the spec breakdown.. hopefully the system is more than just a pretty case
2. whats the PSU in the box? the reason i ask is because often PSUs that come with cases tend to be um... crap. have look at the PSU 101 for ideas and explainations

with prolly 3000 discs under my belt i can say with absolute surity lg is not a brand you want you really mess with if you are looking to do professional/serious work. why? because the c1/c2 error counts on media tend to be unacceptably high. what does this end up meaning to the end user? disc lifetime dies or movies become out of synch or worse. have a look at the CD/DVD 101 for ideas and explainations

again along the lines of the case. are you building a serious machine or just another pretty box?

since you'll be workin with photoshop and premier and stuff, you'll want to seriously consider Intel processors as they [the processors] have a much better time dealing with those applications.

whats the make and model of this stuff?

1. by getting something like a MSI K8n neo4 (if yer adament on sticking with AMD which, for this application isnt a good idea) you wont be stuck with a crappy onboard audio solution. it also is one of the better performing boards of its class
2. which 480w PSU is that? Thermaltake makes a few (i.e., 1 or 2) good PSUs and the rest are garbage. see PSU 101 for reasons and suggestions

i suspect you can get better speakers than this for less.

this is a work machine? seems an awefule lot like a game machine thats trying to be played off as a work machine.

thats why theres a OC 101


well since i do this kinda stuff (photography and video stuff) as a side job i'll tell you straight up that this is a bling-bling gaming machine thats being passed off as a work station. the basics

1. all the stuff listed in 1-6 are CPU bound as noted above. the video card does nothing there. so getting a top of the line $500 videocard or whatever isnt going to help anything
2. you'll want to reconsider your core platform since AMD processors arent nearly as effective doing these tasks as Intel ones. pricewise you'll probably be looking at say a (and im guessing at this point) a Pentium 4 530 on a 915 based motherboard with at least 1gb of ram.
3. anyone serious about doing photo stuff and video stuff will quickly realize 160gb is piss all nothing. you'll chew through that so stupidly fast its not funny anymore. have a look at the HDD 101 for some ideas there on what to look for when buying a HDD but generally for video people id reccomend nothing short of 200gb
4. all this "extra crap" like the case, lights, keyboard, mouse. floppy, flash reader, modem, speakers etc can be grouped into one "the rest of the sutff" expense and allocated $150
5. the 6600gt is a silly choice for a work system as such -- soemthing like the 6200tc is more than sufficient -- and i might go as far as to suggest an onboard setup to save money. since photoshop and premier and stuff wont be videocard bound, that wont be an issue
6. ever so important. dont chince out on a power supply. get a nice solid one, again reccomendations in the PSU 101

as for point #7. sure any machine you buy now may be upgradeable in 2 years but how much of it will be useful is doubtful. as for a more realistic and effective setup:

alright all, forgot to mention this is my gaming pc but my dad needs this stuff for his stuff when he wants to use it- hence AMD and 6600GT

comp isnt for looks, just figured spenidng a grand on a new comp, why not making it look good, the reason case is listed first is cuz i compied and pasted from website

also my dad is computer illiterate, so dual monitor and stuff like that wont be his thing

Yeah but you'll prolly want to consider getting the cuts first then worry about making it pretty (i.e., function before fashion)

If you want to make the system into a gaming capable system then simply take the discrete video option and jack the videocard to a 6600GT as you origonally planned. The Pentium 4 540 is more than capable of playing games.
