Angry Cable modem connections +ethernet card

The dhcp (wider plug than a phone plug) is on the back side of the computer case. The driver for this card has been installed, uninstalled to no avail. This computer seems to like connecting to the cable modem using the USB cable, instead of the more modern dhcp plug. Using the USB drivers for this modem, everything works. Yet, when I try to use the dhcp plug, a connection is enabled and firewalled (I'm using Windows XP's firewall), it will show up normal (no red x), yet it can't connect). Is it because of the dhcp connection plug needing Road Runner's firmware for IP? USB connection works fine. I've tried both types of connections with copies of the cords, so bad cords aren't the problem. The modem is fine. The ethernet card only has the DHCP plug (Linksys brand). I'm on the Internet typing this to you with the computer's USB hub to the USB plug port in the modem. DHCP won't work. I've already tried uninstalling the driver for the ethernet card and re-installing it for 4 times already, so that isn't the problem. Hmmmmm, do I really need to put my Road Runner firmware on there? Cuz now the firmware wants the USB style plug connect. Cuz if you try to use the DHCP port on the modem, the Road Runner firmware will say that the ethernet device doesn't work.......Should I uninstall the USB drivers, or something?
(It works great on my own computer, I'm just using this to set-up another computer for testing. MY computer is off.) Reparing the connections in the Windows XP Home Control Panel doesn't do anything.
