Default 4GB RAM showing much less in Systems !!

Hi,

I have just bought a new computer where I have installed 4 GB DDR Ram.
But viewing through my XP Operating system I only get to see 2.96GB of RAM under System Properties. Why is it so?

I am attaching the screenshots for your reference.Kindly suggest me why is this so?

See here The 32bit 4GB barrier demystified (as much as possible) with pics this is the thread right below your's. Before posting please take a look at some of the previous threads and see if you can find an answer there first. This is for anyone, not just the OP. There is a "Search" funtion in the control bar.

As I am a layman I have a simple question.
Does that mean that there is nothing wrong in the 2gb * 2 RAM I bought? Please confirm.

No there's nothing wrong with the RAM, it's just the OS your using. If you want to be able to see all the memory you'll have to get a 64-bit OS, like Vista, Windows 7, or I hear theres also a 64-bit of Ubuntu, which is free, so you could use that.

no, it will only use the 3GB that it shows because your other hardware components are also using the same address space as your RAM. There is nothing you can do to use all 4GB except get a 64-bit OS.
