Question Video/sound playback strange with .mpg and .wma

It's an odd problem, so I decided that it probably fit best in this category. Anyway, on my Mommy's computer I'm having problems with all files with the extensions of .mpg, .wma, and .wmv. What happens is that it will play regular for a fraction of a second, skip ahead most of a second and repeat the process all over again. I'm puzzled as to what it might be, seeing as I've downloaded the latest drivers for the video card, downloaded Windows Media Player 9, since 10 doesn't work on 98 systems, downloaded the latest Div-X version, downloaded the latest version of Real Player, and I've also downloaded various video/audio codecs. Nothing makes video play regularly. It plays real choppy-ish in all media players, and I don't know where to go from here.

Please, any help at all would be appreciated immensely.

Nobody? It also does this on my dad's computer now. It seems to happen out of the blue (as far as I know, I don't know what stuff that they install on their own time, but I've updated the same stuff on my dad's computer, and it still has the same problem.) If it helps, and I can't see why it wouldn't, both systems are running 98se, but upgrade isn't really an option (neither are willing to fork over 90 bucks for a better processor, much less for a newer operating system).

old computers will run everything slower and not preforem to the desired preformance you would seek with a newer computer or upgraded one at that. beg or bribe them in to upgrading their computers will be a big plus. good luck!!
