Default However no external mics work with this computer :Dell inspiron 1525

My Dell inspiron 1525 internal mic works fine, and so does its recording of line in input from say a 3.5 jack to 3.5 jack output of a cassette player. However no external mics work with this computer now and I've played with the sound panel to no avail.

Well the trouble is, is when I plug a microphone from a head set into the mic jack it thinks its a line in instead of a microphone. Please advise
