Hello all,

First off I'd like to introduce myself. My name is Bob. I'm a Contractor in south central Illinois. I toy around with laptops and desktops as a hobby. I found this forum on a search and like the layout, and ofcourse I have a few questions.

My desktop is an old e-machine, 600mhz, I put a 900 in it and it booted the OS but as soon as it warmed up it froze. I put the 600 back in ans still the same, I saw some jell between the heat sink and processor, could this be my problem?

the "jell" between the heat sink and processor is thermal compound, it fills in the gaps in the metals so they have a good mating surface for heat transfer...you did put the heatsink back on right? that heatsink may not be up to par for the 900hmz, you might try getting some good thermal compound such as artic silver 5 and clean it off and reapply and all that good stuff, here is a good link that tells you how to properly use artic silver 5 for a P3 or similar processor, which i assume is what you have http://articsilver.com/arctic_silver...ions_small.htm

Right at the top it says "Don't put it in your mouth."

LOL, once I saw nailgun instructions that said don't shoot your help in the head.

It could be one of 2 problems,

first, when you took out the old processor and put the new one in, did you take off the "gel"? And did you put the heatsink back on securley? This could be one of your problems.

second, the motherboard couldnt handle a 900Mhz processor and it "blew", this is not as likely to have happened as the first problem, so check the first problem, and if you did and it still doesnt work, it could have been a processor/motherboard problem.

Just out of curiosity, what type of processor was it? If it was a processor/mobo problem, wouldn't the computer not boot at all?

Hmmm... Maybe you just have to reformat your hard drive and reinstall windows, i know when i installed a new motherboard, it would start loading the xp screen, then freeze, but reinstalling windows fixed that. So try doing that and see if it works.

Yeah, but he only changed processors. That wouldn't require installing windows again.
If you were able to load your OS before it crashed, it's most likely a heat issue. Invest in a new HSF and see if that fixes your problem. I'm sure HSFs for your processor won't cost much.

1. As someone noted the jelly stuff you saw was "thermal paste" or "thermal goop" ... now i find it odd that you identified it as "jelly" which suggests that there may be too much on there (too much = bad)

2. When using a different processor, you gotta re-apply the thermalpaste (very thin layer)

3. Now since im guessing you have an older machine, it is quite possible that some stuff died due to overheating when you powered it (with the 900 configuration) up which would potentially explain why it doesnt work when you try again with the 600

The processor type is a VIA 3c 900.
