Default Exposed Wires on Dell AC Adapters: QUICK HELP APPRECIATED!

Hi,

I have a Dell Vostro 1500 that has been sucking the life and the money out of me ever since I got it a year and a half ago. First it was the battery that died a year after I bought it. (It cost about $60 to replace it with a refurbished battery; it's still going strong after 6 months, but we'll see what happens in the next 6 months.)

Now it's the AC Adapter (65 W, PA-12 family). I've been getting the error messages when I plug the adapter in; apparently, the computer doesn't recognize the Adapter as one of its own. Usually jostling the part right behind the laptop, where there is a cylinder-shaped wedged rubber and the silver wires are exposed, solves the problem. But lately it's been getting harder and harder to fix the problem until I had a fright lasting about 10 minutes just now. So I think it's finally the time for me to change my adapter. (The cable that connects the adapter to the wall is a-ok.)

I've been looking for cheap ones online, but most of them are in 30 dollar range. I really can't afford 30 dollars right now, but I absolutely need the laptop for work. So I need either 1. a cheaper source, if you have any, or 2. a way to fix the exposed wire problem with a cheaper solution.

And I'll be leaving on a trip on Saturday, so if I can get a fast reply, it'll be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance, o great gurus.

Also, I would appreciate any tips on keeping the wires safe for longer periods of time.
