Memory upgrade

I want to upgrade the memory of my loptop. It came with a 512mb and want to upgrade it to a bigger capacity one, which I already got it. My question is: what do I need to do to replace the one installed with the new one? Do I have to remove the the existing one a stick in the new one?

You need to figure out the type of memory it needs, first. Look up the model on the manufacture's website, and it should tell you the type of memory and the maximum you can install.

Most laptops have two memory slots, but one or none of them may be open. It's possible that you have two 256MB chips or just one 512MB. Either way, given how cheap RAM is now, you might as well pick up at two 1GB or bigger sticks.

I already figured it out, I got the I need to upgraded. Do I need to follow a special procedure?, or just I need to turn off the loptop, flip it over, rermove the old memory and stick in the new memory?

Pretty much what you described. Swapping out memory is simple.

I think some thing is not right, I did it the way I described, then I turned on the computer, but the monitor is all black. The power indicator is on, so I removed out the new memory and put the old one back in and this time the monitor turned on.
I got the information about the model from toshiba website in order to get the right memory.

Do you think I am doing something wrong or the memory could be deffective.
My computer has space for 2Gb, it originally came with a 512MB, I got two 1GB memory. I want to tell you that I also tried leaving the 512MB and adding one 1GB to the second slot and again the monitor is all black.

Well, that sounds like a problem. Theoretically, any memory of the correct type can work with any computer, but that isn't always the case. Sometimes certain RAM just won't work with certain motherboard, for no good reason, and that may be the case here.

Try one stick at a time of the 1GB. Both slots do not have to be used.
