Compaq contura 430c battery problem/enquiry

Hey all
I got my first ever laptop today and believe it or not it only cost me £5 and it`s the compaq contura 430c.It only has 8MB RAM and runs Windows 95, but i only need it for word so it`s all good.
Anyways i tried running it of the battery and with no luck, i can only boot/use it with the mains power cable, which takes the essence/point of having a laptop.
Anyways does anybody know how i can use it with just the battery and by not using a mains, also does anybody know what`s wrong with it,whether it`s dead/faulty (which is my incling).

8MBs of RAM??!! You won't be able to do much of anything with that.

I know like i said i only want it for word.
Once i get a job i`ll buy a better one.
