Default Do laptop Batteries die/stop working?

Hey all
I got my first ever laptop yesturday and it`s well over 10 years old lol, it`s the compaq contura 430c, and well it won`t run form the battery, only from the mains power supply and i need it to run from the battery.
Now my question is could this be due to the battery being dead, or could it be something else, and would i be able to run the laptop from the battery if i get a new one?

Cheers

Carl

If its 10 years old its pretty much a guarentee the battery is dead... Rechargable batteries all die over time and unfortuinatley yours is probably up there.

That`s what i thought, so would a new one work? like would i be able to run off that instead of having to keep using the mains like a pc?

A 10 year old laptop??? It must weigh like 20 kilos!

Yes, battery is dead. Battery on my laptop was dead after first year. I was always running it from battery because I used the laptop for university.

Finding a replacement for your laptop will prob. be difficult to impossible. You might have better luck getting the battery recelled.

Save the cash and buy a laptop from this era. For what are you using the laptop?

Just for word excel etc, i can`t afford a modern one, cause i`m not working and i`m a student and so get £30 a week, but it has to go on my contract phone which i stupidly signed up to.

Hey i have the same problem. My laptop is about 7 years old when the battery died. Be careful that u will be able to return the new battery if it doesn't work. I bought a new one from tiger direct, didnt work. Then i bought one from dell for 200 bucks more, still didnt work.

Something 10 years old it prolly isnt even worth to invest in a new battery imo.

Dont skimp on a power supply,if it fails, it usually takes out other components alongside it.
New? Dont forget to read the rules, Know them so you dont break them:)

You can get a battery for pretty much any laptop off of eBay. Why did you buy a 10-year old laptop?
