you may have just answered a question i have had on my mind for the past quite a while

Does that by any chance go into the little tiny slots by the PCI slots that always seem to be useless and have no need as no components generally utilise them ?

The pci-express x1 slots? Yes. Some other things use them too though, raid controllers, network cards, etc.
