Default P/C slow as molassas after McAffe install

Hi all,

Help! My Norton subscription expired and instead of $50.00 per year renewel, I installed McAfee which I discovered was free as a comcast subscriber. Install went fine but now my P/C is 75% slower. I'm not very computer literate. I have a 4 year old Compaq Presario with 144GB (memory?) with 50GB free. In terms of RAM it shows 2.20GHz, 448MB.

I did some searching and discovered that most anti virus programs are 'hogs" but McAffee seems to be one of the biggest. Would appreciate any suggestions on another anti virus program, preferably free as I'm currently unemployed.

Thank you!

Both Norton and McAfee are huge resource hogs, and you wont see anyone here recommending them. AvgFree is an excellent free antivirus application that you can use.

Thanks. Could you tell me which link I should go to? I searched avgfree and there are a ton of different sites. Which particular AVG software should I install. Just looking for basic protection.

Thanks again!

I removed the McAffe and installed the free AVG. P/C is running much faster, but not as fast as when I had the Norton. Thanks a bunch!

If you want a really "light" antivirus program, go here and get the NOD32 Antivirus trial.

Looks like you have 160 gb hard drive, not memory. And you have 512mb of memory with 64mb being shared with the video, hence 448mb left. With less than 1gb of memory you shouldn't be installing Nortons or Mcafee. Suggest AVG or any other free antivirus which doesn't take up much memory such as Avira and Avast. If possible, I would upgrade your system to at least 2gb of memory. Your speed could be related toward what processor you are running as well. Hopefully its not a celeron.

Thanks for all your help! I'll give the free AVG a whirl anf let you know. How much would the upgrade cost and is it something I could install myself? Something you could buy on ebay? I could have my son come over and install. He's pretty computer savy and I think he has done this before. Thanks again and I'll check in later.

The cost of the memory actually depends on what computer you have. If you give me the brand and model number I can look to see what would be good for it. If its not a prebuilt machine like from HP, Dell, Gateway, etc. then I would need the model of the motherboard that was used to get its specs.
