Building a computer for the first time. I need some advice on a case and motherboard. I don't want to spend a lot but I want something good too.
Heres what I have so far. CPU http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115041 GPU http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130434 Memory http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231122 HD http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136073 DVD Drive http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827106289 I would like to get a Mobo that has networking and sound built in. Thanks for the help! Edit: I found this motherboard...what do you guys think? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813128358 Last edited by Shaw24; 07-01-2009 at 11:15 PM. |

First thing I notice is that the MB supports CrossFire while your GPU has a NIVIDA chipset. Not a big deal unless you might want to add a second GPU in the future, in which case you would want a MB that supports SLI or a GPU with an ATI chipset.
I'd also go with faster 1066 memory. If you can find a pair off the QVL List for your MB you're assured of good compatability. Buy your PSU and case separately - You'll get better PSU quality. Get at least a 500-600W PSU, (or more if you don't want to replace it when you upgrade) Pick out an ATX midtower or fulltower case you like and pay attention to number of fans. Good airflow is essential, but too many fans and you may not like the noise generated. Lastly, pick out a good aftermarket CPU cooler, (the stock cooler won't handle overclocking) Take your time and read the manuals when assembling. The best part is when you punch the button for the first time and it actually works.

Everything looks good but the GPU the GTX 260 good but you can get the same thing for cheaper if you get an ATI Radeon 4870. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814150394 Now as for you motherboard I would get this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813128358. By the way you can get a better system if you go with AMD and it will save you money.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103471 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813128387 everything else you have will work with it you can use the extra money to get a ATI Radeon 4890 for $50 extra its as good as a GTX 275. Do what you think is right

What psu?
I would go with an amd rig or i7, socket 775 is essentially eol and will be phased out once they stop producing the current models, no new cpu releases are scheduled for 775.

Boomer is right if you won't a system that will be outdated in a couple of months then you need to get a i7 which will cost you $500 more or so or you can get AMD which will cost you $100 or more less so you decide.

Even though q9550 gonna be outdated in couple of months it will easily last him for next 2 or 3 years. If I were you I would wait until september and see the prices of i5's and 1156 motherboards.

Thanks guys...I put together a new wishlist at newwegg with the AMD processor fatback recommended and the ATI GPU. I have always liked Intel and Nvidia for whatever reason but if AMD is cheaper and faster then I will give it a try.
I don't need the latest and greatest - I just want something that is pretty damn fast and will last me a while. Here is what I'm upgrading from: Dell Dimension 8200, 2 Ghz P4, 768 MB DDR and a Geforxe FX 5600 256MB. |

You will love AMD they have never let me down and for the prices they offer you can't do better. I like Intel but they are over priced and you do get enough for what you play for my Mac has intel and it is quick but was nothing compared to my pc. The ATI card I recommended will serve you well and when it come to price/performance ratio you can't go wrong with ATI.
