Mic is automagically muted

I'm just using whatever onboard sound came with my generic motherboard - I think it's ac97. Anyhow every time I go to use the mic for something it is muted and I have to unmute it in the sound control dialog box. Is there any way around this?

I have attached a screen shot.

I don't use speakers so I don't have that problem. Headset all the way.
