Need Help

Hi, first time posting.

Total components I have:
ASUS P4P800SE
CPU 3.0 ghz with fan or w/e
ATI 9800Pro
512MB DDR400 x2
HD 60GB
DVDROM 16x
Power Supply 400W
Mid Tower Case

Problem:
I installed the new mobo and nothing happens but a red light turns on (labelled SB PWR1 below it). Well someting happens, the fan and light turns on for about .0001 fraction of a second then the red light comes on.

Backstory
Last week we had a thunderstorm, power surge and fried my old motherboard ASUS P4R800VM and power supply. CPU was fine, memory, video card, everything but power supply and MOBO

Now I got a new power supply 400W and a new MOBO - ASUS P4P800 SE
I put the MOBO in and connected... well connected what I know to connect.

There are two LEDs (unlabelled, i connected the rest that were labelled like PWR and HDLED and SPKLED) from the panel not connected and I didn't connect the USB stuff cuz no idea where that goes. There's a bunch of postiive (+) and negative (-) shit labelled on there but where the hell's it go on the MOBO? I see the blue stuff labelled USB56 and USB78 below it but which one and which is positive which is negative, then there's the top and bottom half of them, what order do they go which section and up or down?

The power supply has a main thing connected to the MOBO, a small 4 pin connected and that's it. Then it has one going to the DVDROM, and a second one to the ATI 9800 Pro which after connecting to that goes to the fan on the side of the case and then that goes to the HD.

This is how it was set on the old MOBO... atleast I think cuz I know nothing about which connector does what, this is all foggy memory of 8 months ago when I installed my 9800pro card.

I've never built a computer, never done anything other then putting in 512MB Ram and my video card.

Back to the Main Problem:
I turn on the power switch and the fan doesn't start, nothing happens, EXCEPT a flash of blue light from the fan, THEN a red light turns on at the bottom of the MOBO and below it says "SB PWR1"

Now all I can think of is maybe I didn't connect another power thing to the MOBO cuz i remember a small 3 pin hole thing that was connected to my old one but I can't thing of where to connect it on this one.

The MOBO instructions said just connect the main (large) power thing and connect the 4 pin thing beside the CPU. I did that but there's a small 3 pin thingy and the rest is basically the pins that fit inside the hardrive and DVDrom and video card.

Btw a little of the clay fell off my CPU chip when I took it out of the old one, do I need more clay or will it be ok with just a little bit of that gray clay on there? Could it fry the MOBO if i don't put more clay?

Sorry bout all these questoins but I can't afford to pay the local guys to put it together cuz $70 power supply and $115 for the new mobo from newegg.com i'm flat ****in broke.

Plz help guys, hope I didn't fry the new mobo by connecting something in the wrong spot i followd the mobo instructions as best as I could it's really vague.

Well CPU clay aka Thermal paste is almost a must. Might wana buy some and reapply it. Not really a major problem on why it doesn't start. But I have a good idea on why your computer does not start. Tinkering with the CPU (takeing out of slot) and not knowing what you are doing could have damaged it. Since you know how to take it out. Checkout the pins, if any are bent , missing ect. Make sure its nice and snug in the slot like you first pulled it out.

Try the power test:

1.) Remove the following from Motherboard:
Hard-drives , mouse , monitor , graphics card(s) , USB ware , sound card , floppy , CD/DVD roms.
2.) You should only have a blank Motherboard with only CPU intact and memory.
3.) Make sure power supply is connected to motherboard. Should be (1) 20 or 24 pin plug . (1) 4 pin plug. Only those 2 should be connected.
4.) Start PC.
5.) If all goes well. PC should power on and begin to read .

If nothing happens .. Can be Power supply OR CPU OR Motherboard. Your case. Recommend a new CPU

have you tried new Ram? the ram might have been messed up

No need for new ram or new CPU, the local computer place tested them out and said they were ok. I'm gonna test the power out now.

I do have those two power pins connected to the MoBo. No I did not bend or ruin any of the CPU pins I read not to do that in the CPU instructions. I put the little arrow on the CPU facing the correct spot. There is a little bit a clay still as well.

The CPU was stored in it's original plastic casing that it came in so I don't think it became damaged since the computer store tested out my stuff.

Testing power now...

The CPU fan spins for 1 second then stops, and the red light comes on. Is it possible that the 2 LEDs I didn't connect cause this.. or the USB plugs? I really don't think I damaged the CPU unless the computer place didn't test that, cuz I only saw them test the graphics card and memory.

first off what's a PSU?

Second off i'm the biggest idiot. I was not pushing the power on button on the front. I was pushing it on the back and MoBo light turning on but... damn that's ignorant? LOL

I need help with BIOS tho. CPU temp is rising 157 F or 69 C now (shit it keeps going up)... is that normal? should i shut this off until I get more CPU clay to put on the fan? This is the gray clay that goes between the fan and CPU.

EDIT:
Damn thing is at 70 C and 159 F now...

Windows booted up.

I put in the CD to Install the motherboard and I the screen flashing black then back to desktop then goes black again. Then I get "System has recovered from Series error"

I take out the CD and it quits doing the flashing...?

EDIT:

Took out the cd to instlal the motherboard put in the Windows XP Cd and it starts making ALOT of noise and does the same thing again. What did I do wrong when connecting the DVDROM? It keeps saying serious error whenever i put in a CD

lol, dont worry, soemthing like that happens to everyone.

the temp is that high, most probably because of the thermal paste on the cpu. you said some fell off, then i would suggest buying some more, its not expensive, and apply a thin layer on.

p.s. PSU = Power Supply Unit
