Problem with my DVD RW

Hello everyone, first time posting here

I have an LG DVD-RW (in devmgmt it says HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-H12N) and since i had some virusses on my PC and cleaned it(with AVG in safe mode), it stopped working as a burner. It can read any CD/DVDs but Nero and other burning software, including winXP's one, won't let me burn any more CD/DVDs.
I googled its name but results weren't too helpful, maybe because im not too good on this side.
Can anyone help me please? i need to backup my datas and i'm thinking of reinstalling the OS after that.
