Default need help with my IDE drives please

Hi guys, I'm confounded with an issue using my IDE devices. I have a Sony dvd/r and a samsung cd/r installed in my desktop. I recently installed a new MB with Intel e-8500 core duo processor. The MB is ECS g43-tm v 1.0a. Ever since I installed the new mb my dvd is only identified even though they are both connected using an IDE cable with two jacks. It doesn't read the Samsung cd drive. I tried setting my CMOS and it will not recognize it. Now here's the weird part. I disconnected the Sony DVD and connected the Samsung...it saw it. When i disconnected the Samsung and connected the Sony...it saw that one two. When both are connected it only sees the Sony dvd/r for some reason. Also, whenever I play a dvd/cd in the recognized drive...I can't do anything else, i.e. surf the web, play WoW etc. With my processor power and 3g of RAM I should be able to burn a dvd while doing multiple other tasks no? I've updated drivers, screwed around in BIOS and I can't get the two to be seen at the same time, which also makes me wonder about the slowing down of my comp while anything is being read/written in the available drive. Any help would be so appreciated Thanks.

If these are both on the same IDE cable make sure one is set to master and one to slave by the jumpers on the back.

Holy Crap that worked! Wow I feel like an idiot. I remember the jumper popping out of one of the drives when I put them back in after rebuild, and I just popped it back on the wrong two pegs. DOH. Why do you think it kills my whole system to burn a dvd in the drive now though? I mean, the mouse sputters and I can't do much of anything when using the drive. Could it be burnt out? Thanks again and cheers!

Look in your Device Manager and make sure the IDE controller is in UDMA mode, not PIO mode.

Hey thanks for the quick reply I went into Device manager and everything is set to DMA. Here's what I tried... I played a song in Windows Media Player then tried to install software from a cd. Regardless of which drive I use (they're both working now) my comp goes into sputter mode. The song skips and my mouse is rendered stupid. What could possibly be the problem? Thanks for any and all help!

In windows. Control Panel-Device Manager-Hardware- Click the dropdown/+ by the IDE controller. Right click the IDE controller that the drives are on-click properties.

I tried that, and set everything to DMA. It still won't play anything w/o making my comp sputter. Plus I've noticed upon re-install of some software i.e. WoW..it's not reading at the speed it should I think. It took over an hour to install the first package. On my old comp which was waaaay slower it took maybe 20 mins. Something isn't clicking right with my IDE drives and I can't lock it down I have 3 options for primary IDE and 3 for 2nd. I enabled all to DMA, but one Primary spot says all data transfered PIO even though I selected DMA in the drop down menu for this device. I tried disabling this device and neither drive works when I do that...man I just want them to work.

When you installed a new motherboard did you do a clean install of windows? Or if you didnt did you uninstall all the old board drivers before changing over?

No I didn't re-install windows for lack of an external HD. I need to back up all my pics and music first. Could this be the problem and is there anyway to go around it w/o re-installing windows? And btw...why am I seen 3 primary and 3 secondary IDE sources under device manager? Thank you for helping bro.

Put your drive in another system if possible to back up your data and do a fresh install.
