My CD drive won't open... most of the time

So, i put my DVD burner into my new build (see sig) and put the original cd drive that came with the system i'm using back in. before it worked perfectly. Until now it has been sitting on my bookshelf, it was there for about a year.
Now, when i press the open button it whirs up but the drive won't open 90% of the time. When it did open, it worked fine. read the discs and everything. it also opened up again fine. But now it's acting up. I've tried unplugging it with the computer switched off and plugging it all back in but to no avail.
Whats wrong with my drive?

They go bad at any time, its a mechanical device, it's time to replace it.
