Default USB-Serial adapter help

My laptop (HP Pavilion dv6000) doesn't have a serial connector. I'm in need of a serial connector, and I have a generic USB-Serial connector. I'm having trouble getting it to work, I think it's a driver related problem. The computer recognizes it, and tries to install it as Prolific USB-to-Serial Comm Port (COM 7). The problem is, the hardware for the device I have hooked up doesn't recognize anything on any of the Comm Ports. In the device manager, I have this under the USB-Serial tab: This device cannot start. (Code 10)

Any suggestions?
