Default how to transfer data?

dear members

greetings. this is my first posting at this forum.

i have a core 2 duo system with win xp pro with sp2. there are two hard disks, one new 250 gb and other older 40 gb, both healthy.

windows was installed in the new one and the older one was made slave.

now due to some software glitch, the windows has freezed and it is not responding. rebooting and even repair installation of windows has not helped. the task manager is not also coming up,

under these circumstances, is there any way to recover the data in the new hard disk (NTFS) without reformatting?

thanks
