Default Need HUGE help

I was infected with some virus or viruses a day ago with symptoms listed below. Normally I can figure it out and fix it but I am completely stumped and need help.
1. I have Hijackthis but it will not let me run it even in safe mode.
2. It has disabled my antivirus AVG
3. any antivirus or spyware program I download will not run.
4.real slow internet.
5. Comp freezes at times
those are most of the symptoms. any help is greatly appreciated as this is my only means to do my online homework so I need to get up running very soon.

Thanks

Ask any questions necessary to help fix this problem.

Buy an external hard-drive and back-up your important files.
Because soon you might not be able to even log into your
computer, and all your important files will be lost.

After backup, reinstall Windows. Pretty easy. Put Windows CD
in tray, boot computer from CD instead of hard-drive, select
install windows - this will overwrite existing installation and all
files, are you sure? Yes.

After Windows installs, install avast! antivirus. Hook up your
external hard-drive, and run a scan on the files that are on
it.

I agree with this. If you can't even run HijackThis! then you have some severe issues with your computer. Don't know that you need to buy an external hard drive. What I would do is get a small flash drive, a lot cheaper, and save only the important files you need. In the future, find a free webhost with unlimited storage or a good size storage and backup your files on there that way when you have a clean system, you can just re-download your files. Make sure to scan those files again once you have a clean install as you do not want to re-infect your computer due to some stupid infected file you saved

Reformatting will get rid of the viruses and your programs and your data. You will end up with a blank HD ready to put the OS on again.

Yes BUT you will need a restore disc or an Operating System disc to load windows back on. If you don't, you'll end up with nothing. Re-formatting a disk deletes EVERYTHING including windows so make sure you have some way to restore your operating system

Thanks again for the responses last question though. I know the harddrive is the storage for all programs and so on but can viruses get stored anywhere else or is everything 100% clear once you wipe a hard drive?
