Default speaker and itunes problems

i have two separate problems. itunes will periodically skip during songs and its not because im running lots of other stuff at the same time. the other problem is that frequently my speakers will pop as if being hit by static electricity, but i have no bare cables hanging out on my speaker system. they will pop when nothing is playing.

they are external speakers and it the popping noise is a hardware issue. the problem with itunes is probably because it's a poorly scripted program and uses quicktime which is also probably poorly scripted for windows.
