Default Free anti-spyware and such?

OK, since I keep my computer so locked down I'm usually not too concerned with anti-spyware (or usualy even anti-virus ) but I was given this old computer that "was virus infested" and asked to clean it off. It's now sitting infront of me with a fresh copy of XP installed, but I'm wondering what to do now. It's only a PIII 1GHz so I don't want anything too crazy on it.

I'm thinking of using AVG on it, unless there's a better free program (mostly thinking low resource than anything ) I know of some programs such as Adaware and Spybot, but I'm curious what the best real-time spyware catching software is... Any suggestions?
