Default Apple I book G4

I have family dropping off a school laptop and wants me to extract some personnel information off the hard drive. Apple said they will replace the laptop when she sends it back because of the number of repairs. the hd will only work for minutes at a time. I never had a Apple before and using quad core. Any options to get her files off?

I can network or take the drive out. i don't know what the format of the drive is. NTFS or maybe fat32. Any suggestions would be appreciated. i have a external usb drive i use. have pen drives for usb also. will any of it work?

thanks
