Default Laptop doesn't recognize Diskdrive.

I've had my laptop for two years and never had a problem with the diskdrive. Now, I put a DVD, CD, System Restore Disk in and my diskdrive doesn't read the disk. I see a yellow light flash a couple of times, it makes the sound likes it turning the disk and reading but then it stops and nothing happens. I checked My Computer and it only shows a C drive and no D drive. I checked my toshiba DVD player for the DVD's and it saids it doesn't recognize the D drive and check for connections. And the media player doesn't come up for CDs. Anyone hear know what I can do to fix this? Thanks.

Try this:
Start > Search : 'Device Manager' > DVD/CD-ROM driver.
-If the drive shows, right-click and go 'Properties' than go to the 'Driver' tab and click 'Update Driver'.
-Reboot.

-If the drive doesn't show you need to enable it in your BIOS menu, reboot and press your setup hot key. (Example F8)

SInce your using vista

Right click My computer>Manage>Device manager and then find the dvd drive and then uninstall it reboot and it should redetect and install on its own. If it does not download the driver from manufacture website.

I tried uninstalling the driver device, updating, and restoring through device manager and I'm getting the same results. I think the driver may be broke. I'm thinking about getting a new desktop; my laptop is ageing quite a bit (I only have 1GB of RAM).

Thank you for the helpful info bigrich0086, Stoic Sentinel.
