Default Xbox 360 overheating

Yesterday me and my friend were playing on my Xbox 360. We played halo3 on co op, versed, etc then the Xbox randomly shutted off. This wasn't the power because my monitor said "no signal". I turned it on again and we played it for another 20 mins or so when the problem repeated. After about 30 mins i got the rrod and I immediately shut it off to let it cool down. That night we watched a movie on it and it was fine and has still been working today.

So my question is what should I do to keep it cooler? Is it possible to buy a cooler that you would use for a computer and put it in my 360? I've considered buying an external cooler from JB Hifi but they dont look very promising.
What should I do?

Yes my warranty is still valid but I dont want to have to wait two weeks for them to fix it and don't want a refurbished one.

Thx for all your help & responses

Alot of people these days open it up and re-apply some decent thermal paste but that would probably void warrenty

Id go and buy that external cooler you talk about,If that doesnt fix the problem then i would send it back simple as.

There are a few things you can do, some that voids warranty and some doesn't.

1) If you don't mind more noise, attach an external cooler
2) Reapply thermal paste
3) Get an aftermarket cooler
4) Get an aftermarket case

that is the fan (yea i know it is from uk), it goes onto the back with the power socket on the fan in the console power socket, and then the power cable plugs into the fan. It sucks more air out of the back basically.

I think there is one for the top or end, depending on how your xbox is sat, but they aren't as good

Do you know what version you have? I just recently got an Arcade (probably a Jasper) but it's TREMENDOUSLY cooler and more quiet than any of my friend's units. I guess what I'm really getting at is if you have a new unit (as in under a year) it really should be one of the better ones. Any problems you're having are probably flaws you should have checked out by MS.

If this isn't the case or can't be done, as others have said, there are after market coolers and such. Though I'd be sure you've got it in an optimal position. If you have it in a cubby, try moving it more into the open. It's it's on it's side, try laying it down(or vise versa).

i would rather get an external one and keep my warranty intact thankyou very much

If it is out warranty though, go for it, and make sure you get some good thermal paste to whack on there!
