Default Media Player Surround

I have the speakers and everything for a 5.1 setup in my computer and it works fine for gaming, but when listening to music it only comes out of left and right. I can turn on speaker fill, but that only adds echo as if there is a band in front of me and it echoes in the back. Is there any way I can get my stereo music to play through the entire system?
