so they can keep their prices very competitive.

the 5870 (sub $400) is about equal with the gtx 295 ($500) for benchies give or take.

Is there any reason why 512bit would be more expensive to make than 256bit? If not then they could still sell the 5870 at that price but the performance would absolutely kill the gtx295.....

Thats what I ment by hoping for something amazing, was hoping ATi would go to 512bit and cream Nvidia.

ATI didn't think 512 bit bus was necessary. And it really isn't. There is no lack of bandwidth. 156 GB/s for the 5870, and 128 GB/s for the 5850.
