Default software installed by broadband technician

This may be a noob question, but what software is crucial to a cable modem to operate? I recently "upgraded" from DSL to cable and the "technician" installed a software suite from the company's account activation web site. This company also generously provided McAfee for free.

Any advice would be welcome!!
