Default should I reformat

My daughter got a bad virus and I tried reinstalling with repair to save data. On starting back it locked up on loading. I tried it twice and had the same results. I then have hooked her hard drive to one of my other PC's and recovered her data in her my documents to an external HD. So now I am going to do a complete install. Should I reformat first or will it do that on the install. I am guessing I should reformat. Thanks for the info.
