Default HELP while i still have internet

Bought a usb wireless internet adapter (i know... but its all wal-mart had and i needed the net...) and even now when i have finally installed drivers that work, i get constant disconnects, and if i click diagnose, i get a bsod that says something about a usb error. it is a linksys wusb100 adapter. vista home premium 32-bit.

also, my computer will not fully turn on with it plugged in. it will finish the loading bar, but the welcome screen will not come up until i unplug the adapter. i really need to get this resolved, as its pretty imperitive i have stable internet here in a couple days (video conference with navy dad in japan)
