Default Help with Intel S5000PAL

Hey all,

When it comes to PCI-e cards, is it possible to cut corners? I'm running a server with an Intel S5000PAL mobo. On the backplane there are 3 available slots. A regular PCI-X slot and a 2 PCI-e (x8) slot.
My question is:Can a PCI-e x1 card work in a x8 slot?

It should be fine. If you have open backed slots you can even put 16x cards in 4x slots.

What would prevent a PCI-e card from not even showing up? I've tried a full-sized card which didn't even show up. I'm going to be trying a half sized card just to see if it was the connectors.
