Default programs for a comprehensive test of my system

i have recently gotten extremely interested in the world of pc. i have done lots of research and i'm ready to make a new build, which i will test out my newfound knowledge of raid setups, sli, phys-x, overclocking, etc.

what i would like to request is a list of programs i could use to monitor my progress (or degress, as the case may be). i know there are programs i can use to monitor/test/rate my system. some of them that i know and have casually tried is superpi and cpu-z. i've also read about Prime95 as a popular stress test

so if you know of programs i can get to monitor/test any performance or hardware of my system please post them here. anything from clock speed, temp monitor, fan controller, whatever. thank you in advance

p.s.: i've seen the sticky on the general software section. i won't yell at you if you list some of these, just letting you know.
