Default Synctoy / backup problems with extra hd

I recently bought an I-0 Data 1.0TB HD for extra backup and storage. I have been using synctoy to regularly backup my important files and folders from my main laptop. Every time I run synctoy (I usually do so in the "contribute" mode), I get a "corrupt file" response. In addition, my backup procedure quits and it says "Exception during preview: The FileSyncProvider failed while detecting changes." Although I was originally able to syncronize my laptop files and folders with the HD, I can no longer finish a simple "contribute" task. I have another 160GB HD (Buffalo) which works just fine in the same manner. I had another 250GB HD that also failed completely on me and I can no longer use it either.

Can any tell me what the problem is and how to rectify it?

so, on the 1TB do you have any storage?
if you dont have you tried to reformat it?
if you do have files can you transfer them to another HD?
if nothing works send it back and ask for a new one?
