system icons missing

I have lost the volume and network icons from my notification area on the taskbar, and when I go to properties in control panel>taskbar I cannot check the box to select to show them.I am running vista.
A very small problem but it's annoying me, any help gratefully received.

Did some searching and your not the only one with the problem. Try a reboot first and then see if you can enable them.

Thanks G25racer.For the moment a reboot has allowed me to enable them- I normally only have my laptop in hibernate, but recently shut it off, which I assume triggered the problem.If it recurrs I shall try the other methods. Frankly, I'm relieved it isn't me that is the problem, I've only had a computer for a year and as I am self-taught I have real limitations.This forum has been very useful to me, and the vista forum you gave me a link to will be handy too.
