Unhappy Video in text mode has shrunk. Why?

Hello,
I'm running an amd64 PC (Athlon X2 4500+) with onboard nVidia GeForce 6150SE (nForce 430). I can't recall changing any BIOS options and yet, when in text mode (BIOS POST, boot loader, system boot up, text console), my video output is shrunk below the monitor's capacity. I've got a panoramic display (1680x1050) and it used to work just fine with text mode, utilizing the whole available space. Now, it just centers the display and leaves black, unused margins on the sides.
However, when running in graphical mode (official NVIDIA drivers), everything seems to be fine.
The only thing that comes to my mind is the virtual display in Sun VirtualBox - the dimensions and behaviour of the text display were quite similar: centered text in text mode, but still, a full-fledged graphical mode. But hey, I highly doubt that I'm trapped inside a virtual machine! Perhaps watching too many security presentations has made me a bit paranoid...

I'm really confused as to what has happened. How do I get back my panoramic display in text mode, now?
