hi,
question for you all. currently have a sony vaio laptop running xp mce 2005. 120gb hard drive,im running out of space and was considering installing a larger drive (320 or 500 gb) i have 2 questions though: 1) would this larger size drive get too hot,i know larger drives with faster rpm's get hotter, would this b an issue? and most importantly, 2)i didnt get an xp installation disc with my laptop but have created my own recovery discs which contain the OS and apps, would these be enough to reinstall windows on a blank hard drive? |

It's rare to see a laptop drive above 7200 rpm, and most are still 5400. The GB size of the drive won't increase temps, just the RPM, so go as large as you want. >2)i didnt get an xp installation disc with my laptop but have created my own recovery discs which contain the OS and apps, would these be enough to reinstall windows on a blank hard drive? You should be fine. Depending on how you made the Recovery CD's, you may need to manually install some drivers, but it's nothing major.

i dont think that heat would be an issue. hdds for laptops are designed for that "i hope" i think that you shouldnt have any problems installing a larger hdd. just make sure that is readable by the bios. some old bios versions tend to have a limit. example i had an issue where i got a 500gb hdd and the computer could only detect 350gb of it. the rest went as un partitioned space.
it shouldnt be an issue with todays laptop, but something to be aware of.

That's something to be aware of for the last 5 years but for the new laptops available these dasy, you can be sure it can all be read.
