computer cauhgt the swine flu

i have an 6+ year old Compaq that my mother gave , me a long time ago and it's been working great for the most part until a few days ago. i am still surfing the web and taking care of business but it started having problems loading pages after a while and i would get the "program not responding" message 10 times in a row. It also started making the sound a computer occasionally makes when it's thinking ut it makes it for minutes in a row without a break.
i feel like it's the beginning of the end but i simply don't know enough about computers to know if it's true.
is there a program i can download to fix all of my problems?How do i save this relic?
