Default Video and Photo Editing Build

I have a few questions as I have been trying to research alot of this on my own and would love some input.

As the title says this will be mainly for editing video and photography. Im trying to keep this build from blowing up price wise. Of course i would like it to be somewhat future proof as files and stuff continually get larger. So here goes:

mobo: something that uses dd3 and runs dual pci-e x 16
Question: does having two or even three pci-e x 16 really make a difference? or is it just that current software doesnt yet make good use of this ability?
cpu i would like quad core. The amd phenom 955 3.2ghz looks pretty good but im not against intel in any way.
PSU Im still a bit clueless on this so any recommendations would be helpful.

Ok any insights are appreciated.

My recent build was made with much the same intentions in mind (HD video editing, photo editing, mild gaming). Price ended up being right at $1000. An even lower-end GPU would serve your purpose just fine. Multiple GPU's won't help what so even in video/photo editing software. I think Photoshop does now offer GPU accelerated effects, but all I can really tell has changed are some visual aspects (smooth zooming and such). But even so, most everything will be based on the CPU.

My location is China and the electronics are more expensive unfortunately. As for my budget I really dont know yet but around $500 just for the compter wouldnt be a problem.

The other one: thats interesting to hear. yes the cs4 version is gpu accelerated, I shoot with the Canon 50d camera but am really interested in the 7d due to its 1080p and 720p video. did your $1000 setup include monitor and software or just the computer?

I'm not sure what the video is like from the 7d (bitrate and all) but I've edited some things from my Aiptek GVS and it certainly isn't easy on my machine

And sorry, guess I should have clarified. My build didn't include monitor, keyboard, mouse, or speakers. It was just the computer itself.

If you're curious, here's my build. Some of the things were on sale or purchased elsewhere so the price might vary a bit...

A computer like that basically needs a powerful CPU, a lot of RAM and a decent amount of hard drive space. A midrange graphics card should suffice (I hate it when people get hardcore gaming cards for video editing...). $500, however, isn't going to get you anything special, just a mid range everyday computer.

That better not be in reference to my 9800 Haha, but yeah, I think the build of 3D acceleration for said software is OpenGL. Normally I'd say even integrated cards would probably suffice, but I have tried Photoshop CS4 on my laptop... It was missing some kind of support; perhaps OpenGL 3.0? I forget right off, but it worked fine on my older desktop/7600GT.

Nah I didn't even notice that . What I mean is when people make threads like this, and the first thing they say is like "Oh I'm using a GTX 280" or something.
