Default Dead Motherboard? or CPU?

Hello all.

I need to identify if i have a dead motherboard or a dead CPU. My desktop computer froze..so i had to do a hard restart. on restart nothing comes up on the screen. so i opened up the computer and looked around..the fans are still working. I hear the hard drive turn on. I changed the PSU and same result. I took out the memory (all of them) and i don't hear any beeps. I took out the cd drive from the mob and again same result.

so i'm thinking its either the mob or the cpu. how can i know for sure what it is?

i have an amd athlon 5200+ am2. my mob is asus (came with the HP computer--but i put in a bunch of my own stuff). thanks in advance for any help or suggestion.

yep sounds like the mobo. try your CPU in another computer if possible.

you should get beep codes if the cpu is the culprit i mean if you know someone that has a computer with a motherboard that will support your cpu, then i would try it. But it sounds like the motherboard is bad. Check the board for bad caps.

First try the simplest fix. Turn off computer unplug power and then take out the CMOS battery. Leave out for 10 mins then put back in and power it up.

Agree

It is very unlikely for a mobo to just fail after a Powerdown. You normally would see symptoms before the actual failure.
