Default EVGA 9800 GTX+ Fan speed won't hold at manual level?

I have a EVGA 9800 GTX+ that i've always manually adjusted the fan speed when I game. For the last few days - When I set the fan speed - it will spike up to where I set the speed - but then go back to low speed on it's own almost immediately.

I went to Precision website and downloaded the most recent driver update - and thought that solved the problem. But low and behold - it's happening again.

Has anybody else had a similar problem - and how were you were able to fix it?

Thanks

I had the exact same issue with my Evga 9800 GTX. I even called Evga...almost RMA'd it for a new one. They told me it's perfectly normal. It's some hippy power saving crap. If I wanted to be green...I would not even have a computer let alone a huge graphics card...come on Evga...really?

I used RivaTuner and set the fan speed in there. You can select to run at Windows start up...worked every time after that.

AL GORE IS IN MY COMPUBER !!!!

One other thing - The fact that EVGA put a fan controller on their precision application - and then override it with their own software - is kindof counter-intuitive.. no?

I tried RivaTuner with my XFX GTS 250 and got the same thing. My fan is returned to the standard 34% after I put it to anything.

pretty awesome to hear the fan rev up for a second though

I don't see a point making the fan go faster when in games. The card is designed to increase the FAN wen there is more heat and I am sure it won't overheat when AUTO fan is selected.

See mine would run 80c+ while getting down on some intense games. I even got up around 90c while running 3Dmark06 with a slight overclock.

That can heat up the entire case running for a time period. The fan speed BIOS does not always work like some people want it to.

You are right though...the fan speed BIOS is made to kick in when things get hot and is designed to not overheat the card.

I never experienced over 75C even after gaming spree, 10hrs non stop. Maybe resit the heatsink??? and reapply the paste.

Don't you have a GTS 250 even though they are almost the same card. The GTS 250 runs cooler then the 9800 GTX+. You could also have better air flow in your case.

All the GTS 250's I have used run about 5C cooler then the 9800GTX+. It also depends on what brand you have, since different brands use different coolers.

Where you asking me those question?
