Default PS3 firmware update

I'm getting borderlands for ps3 so I went to add my friends to play with and i had an update (3.01). I'm currently on 2.80. I checked online and apparently alot of people have had their blueray drive killed when they got this update. I know alot of poeple do something wrong and post it and it gets out of control but this one seems legit.

Just wondering if anyone on here has had this. I have the original 60gb backwards compatible one. Now i'm not sure about updating and not being able to play the game

I give updates a few weeks before I get them.

Everytime there's any update people claim their system dies from it.

My bluray drive failed after the first week when I got my PS3 back in 08. I returned it for a new one and haven't had any problems since.

Updates have never caused me trouble, but I do hold my breath after each one.
